MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – Honduras confirmed on Friday the first case of death from Guillain-Barre syndrome, considered to be a consequence of the Zika virus infection, Honduran Deputy Health Minister Francis Contreras said Friday.
"We have recorded 57 cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome and one death with symptoms very strongly associated with the Zika virus," El Heraldo news portal quoted Contreras as saying.
The lethal infection case was reportedly registered in the northwestern city of San Pedro Sula.
According to the deputy minister, 185 pregnant women who may be infected with a fever, including that caused by a Zika virus, have been identified in Honduras.
The virus is spread by the Aedes mosquito, which is common in tropical areas of the Americas. Zika poses little threat to the general population, although evidence suggests men can transmit the virus to sexual partners after long exposure and long after any symptoms disappear.
Another study provided evidence that the virus may cause the Guillain-Barre syndrome, affecting the immune and nervous systems that cause non-trauma related paralysis.
At present, there is no vaccine available to treat the Zika virus.
