MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The diplomat was speaking at an event in Japan’s Moscow Embassy timed to the fifth anniversary since the 2011 meltdown at the Fukushima power plant, which caused tonnes of radioactive water to leak into the ocean.
"Japan and Russia are looking for ways to work together to resolve the issue of contaminated water at the Fukushima Daiichi NPP. Russia has not yet lifted restrictions on food imports. I am asking for your assistance in resolving these issues," Ambassador Kozuki said.
He thanked Russia for emergency support it offered to Japan in the wake of a 9.0-magnitude earthquake that unleashed a devastating tsunami, which crippled the Fukushima power plant and killed 15,894 people. Further 2,562 victims are still missing.
A recent report by the International Atomic Energy Agency, an independent nuclear watchdog, showed that radioactivity levels in fish caught near the affected Fukushima prefecture were within Japan’s regulatory limits.
