CAIRO (Sputnik) – Earlier in the day, a ministerial meeting of the Arab League took place in Cairo. Some members of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf demanded that the member states of the organization recognize the Lebanese movement as a terrorist organization.
"Of course, we shall not place [Hezbollah on the list of terrorist organizations]. On the other hand, we praise Hezbollah’s position… in its fight against terrorism, this is a movement of resistance," Jaafari told RIA Novosti.
Hezbollah, a paramilitary and political organization grounded in Lebanon's Shiite population, was established in the 1980s. The group has been fighting alongside the Syrian government against extremist militant groups since 2011.
Hezbollah is considered a terrorist organization by a number of countries including Israel, the United States, the United Kingdom and many European states, but not by Russia.
