The Syrian army and allied popular units have restored full security to the remaining section of the strategic Khanasser-Aleppo-Ithriya road in the country’s northern Aleppo province, Iran’s Fars news agency reported.

Syrian pro-government forces advance on a road through the town of Khanasser, which is the sole link between government-held areas in and around Aleppo and those in the rest of the country, after they reportedly recaptured it from Islamic State (IS) group fighters, on February 29, 2016. - Sputnik International

Also on Thursday, government forces and volunteer troops retook five villages near the town of Khanasser in the north of the province leaving dozens of Daesh militants killed and wounded and their vehicles and military hardware destroyed.

The Syrian Army and its popular allies launched a major operation in February to dislodge militant groups from the surroundings of the government forces’ main supply line from Hama to Aleppo.

Earlier the Syrian armed forces restored full security to eight newly liberated villages in the south of the province.

Meanwhile, the pro-government forces continued their advance towards regions still controlled by the terrorists who have been forced to abandon their positions on the southern plains of Aleppo province.

The Syrian army and allied militia units engaged in a series of fierce clashes with what has remained of the terrorist forces in the newly liberated areas inflicting heavy losses and serious material damage on the enemy.
