WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Obama’s intervention will be just two months ahead of the June 23 referendum where British voters will decide whether they want the country to stay in a reformed European Union.
The US president is scheduled to fly to Hannover on April 24 to open a technology fair. "Barack Obama is coming over at around that time… It would be pretty shocking if he didn’t ask voters to stay in the EU," a source at the UK prime minister’s office told The Independent newspaper.
The UK outlet said that the prospect of Obama’s speaking in favour of UK’s continued membership of the 28-nation bloc has infuriated Leave campaigners.
A petition has already been launched at the UK parliament’s petitions website to prevent the US president from delivering a speech at the Westminster Parliament on the in/out referendum.
