TOKYO (Sputnik) — North Korea denies any involvement in the recent cyberattacks on smartphones of South Korean officials, calling Seoul's accusations nothing more than slander, media reported Sunday.
According to North Korea's Rodong Sinmun newspaper, all the allegations made by South Korea are built on lies and aimed to aggravate the inter-Korean confrontation.
Earlier in the week, South Korean media reported that North Korea had allegedly carried out a number of cyberattacks and stolen information from dozens of Seoul top government officials' smartphones. A virus was reportedly sent by e-mail to 300 employees of the South Korean Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Unification. Attackers gained access to personal information of 40 officials.
The cyberattacks came amid heightened tensions between the two Koreas following Pyongyang's nuclear test and long-range rocket launch violating UN Security Council resolutions and triggering condemnation from the international community earlier this year.
On March 2, the UN Security Council unanimously passed a resolution to extend existing sanctions on North Korea.
