MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) — Ecuador’s anti-narcotics police and coast guard have seized 1.9 tons of cocaine as part of their operation Sea Hunt off the Galapagos Islands, the Interior Ministry said Sunday.
The first batch was confiscated from a high-speed boat last Thursday, while the second boat was captured on Friday.
Both vessels were following a drug-smuggling route around San Cristobal Island from Colombia to Central and North America.
The smugglers tried to throw the drugs overboard to make the boat go faster, the ministry said in a statement. The total market value of the seized cocaine was estimated at $39.6 million.
