MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Two sources with the Kurdish Peshmerga forces told the CBS News broadcaster it had detained a purported Daesh defector as he tried to make his way to Turkey.
Named as Virginia resident Muhammad Jamal Amin, 27, he was reportedly apprehended after reaching a Peshmerga checkpoint near the northern Iraqi town of Sinjar.
The broadcaster cited reports indicating that Amin identified himself as a Daesh defector and that he had "only been in the region fighting with Daesh for a couple months."
The US Embassy in Baghdad could not immediately confirm the detention of a US citizen, saying it had only recently became aware of the reports.
A Kurdish official told the CNN broadcaster the Kurdistan Regional Government's security council was investigating the incident.
