WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – The United States should secure effective sanctions regime against North Korea over Pyongyang’s nuclear program, US President Barack Obama said at the Chief of Missions Conference on Monday.
"We are going to have to keep mobilizing the world to meet shared challenges, and that includes strengthening international rules and norms that undergirded peace and security…to make sure that we are enforcing effective sanctions on North Korea," Obama stated.
Earlier in March, the UN Security Council introduced new sanctions against North Korea in response to Pyongyang’s January hydrogen bomb test, as well as the launch of a long-range rocket to allegedly place a satellite into orbit in February.
The United States has previously said it plans to work closely with China to pressure the North Korean government to stop nuclear and ballistic missile tests.
