"On a daily basis, several times a day, we meet and consult with Staffan de Mistura and his team, with US diplomats and military, we have increased the Russian presence in the UN [intra-Syrian] negotiation group," Alexei Borodavkin told journalists.
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces, fighting numerous opposition factions and radical Islamists. On February 22, Russia and the United States reached an agreement on a ceasefire in Syria. The ceasefire took effect on February 27. It does not apply to terrorist groups operating in the country.
The Swiss city of Geneva is currently hosting the UN-backed proximity talks between the Syrian opposition and the government's delegation, with the aim of putting an end to the deadly conflict.
