GENEVA (Sputnik) – The Saudi-backed Syrian umbrella opposition group, the High Negotiations Committee (HNC), plans to hold talks with Damascus on Syria's reconciliation based on the 2012 Geneva communique on finding a political solution to the crisis in the war-torn country, HNC spokesman Salem Meslet said Tuesday.
"We are going to negotiate on the basis of the Geneva communique [2012's Geneva I] and [the UN Security Council] resolution 2254," Meslet said.
The Riyadh-formed opposition HNC delegation is expected to meet with UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan De Mistura on Tuesday night in Geneva.
The Geneva I communique stipulates the establishment of a transitional body which is expected to create a "neutral environment" in which a transition of power can take place in Syria. According to the communique, the transitional body should exercise executive powers and include members of the current Syrian government, opposition groups and "other groups." It is supposed to be formed on the basis of mutual consent.
