Turkish Air Force Eradicates 45 Kurdistan Workers' Party Fighters in Iraq
08:42 GMT 15.03.2016 (Updated: 08:54 GMT 15.03.2016) Forty-five members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) were killed in Turkish Air Force airstrikes in northern Iraq on Monday, the Turkish General Staff said in a statement on Tuesday.
ANKARA (Sputnik) — On Monday, the General Staff said Turkish military operations against 18 PKK positions in the Iraqi regions of Qandil and Gara had involved nine F-16 and two F-4 fighters.
"During the aerial operation on March 14 in northern Iraq, 45 members of the separatist terrorist organization were killed," the statement reads.
Two ammunition depots and two anti-aircraft mounts were also reportedly destroyed in the airstrikes.
The airstrikes came in retaliation for Sunday's terrorist attack in Ankara that killed at least 37 people and injured more than 100. On Monday, Turkish media reported that the authorities believed two suspects in the bombing had ties to the PKK, which is fighting for an independent Kurdistan and is outlawed in Turkey.
