MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Finding a solution to the conflict in Ukraine is easy in principle, provided the European Union and Russia both understand that Ukraine does not belong to either of them, former Prime Minister of Italy and former President of the European Commission Romano Prodi said Thursday.
"In theory, the Ukrainian problem is easy to solve. Ukraine can be neither European, nor Russian," Prodi said, welcoming the implementation of the Minsk agreement as the most viable means of settling the crisis.
He noted that Ukraine's weakness lay in its internal policy, as well as extreme government corruption.
"Ukraine has become a battlefield," Prodi said, stressing that the European Union and Russia should not be divided over Kiev.
In February 2015, Russia, Germany, France and Ukraine worked out a ceasefire agreement in Minsk to settle the Ukrainian conflict, with both conflicting sides subsequently signing up to the truce.
