The current round of peace talks between the Syrian government and the opposition is focused on a political transition in Syria, not humanitarian aid issues, spokesman of the Syrian opposition’s High Negotiations Committee (HNC) Salem Meslet told Sputnik.

GENEVA (Sputnik) —The Saudi-backed High Negotiations Committee (HNC) is one of the two Syrian opposition delegations taking part in the peace negotiations and includes representatives of some groups considered to be terrorist organizations by Syria and Russia.

"Now the concentration is on the political transition in Syria, not on the humanitarian issues. Because this is the responsibility now of the United Nations and friends of the Syrian people. They are doing okay now, but we want them to do more. We discuss it [humanitarian aid] in our special meetings, there is a task force that focuses on this," Meslet explained.

Syrian Opposition Group Wants to See Russia as Partner in Anti-Terror Fight
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad fighting numerous opposition factions and extremist groups, such as Daesh, which is banned in several countries, including Russia.

A US-Russia-brokered ceasefire came into force in Syria on February 27, although it does not apply to terrorist groups operating in the country, including IS.

According to UN estimates, some 4.6 million are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance in Syria. UN officials have expressed hope that the new round of intra-Syrian peace talks would prevent the five-year conflict from entering its sixth year.

Since the beginning of 2016, UN agencies have delivered humanitarian aid to over six million people in besieged areas in Syria.
