GENEVA (Sputnik) – On Tuesday, Kerry announced that he would travel to Moscow next week for discussions with Russian President Putin on the Syrian peace process.
"After the positive step of Mr. Putin we are expecting to see more positive decisions. We are expecting something that will really save the people of Syria from this nightmare. We look forward to see more action from Russia toward solving the problem of Syria," Meslet said.
On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the withdrawal of the country's air and naval forces from Syria, as they were deemed to have fulfilled the tasks assigned to them. Putin said the remaining groupings at the Hmeimim air facility in Syria's Latakia province and the naval facility in the port of Tartus would play a key role in monitoring the cessation of hostilities between the Syrian government and rebel forces.
"This is time to pay attention to a political solution. War never solves problems. The damage that happened to the Syrian people by the regime has to be stopped, and the only side that can really put pressure on the regime is Russia," Meslet told Sputnik.
A US-Russia-brokered ceasefire came into force in Syria on February 27, although it does not apply to terrorist groups operating in the country, such as Daesh, which is banned in a range of states including Russia and the United States.
