Ukraine plans to approve a roadmap for overhauling its armed forces by the end of March to bring them into line with NATO guidelines, the country’s Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak said Thursday.

KIEV (Sputnik) — This comes a day after Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko endorsed a new Concept for the Development of the Security and Defense Sector, which urges for the adoption of NATO and EU security principles and standards.

"We expect the Strategic Defense Bulletin to be passed by the end of March. This document will be a de facto ‘roadmap’ for reforming the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It will be based on the NATO criteria and principles," Poltorak wrote on Facebook.

The Ukrainian government is seeking membership of both NATO and the European Union for the country. According to President Poroshenko, the country will hold a referendum on Ukraine’s bloc status, but only after NATO requirements have been met.
