WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On Wednesday, McGurk, who represents the Global Coalition to Counter the Daesh, said an offensive to reclaim Iraq’s second largest city of Mosul from the Daesh has already started. The official described the operation as a slow, steady squeeze.
"President Barzani and Brett McGurk shared views on Mosul operation and int[ernational] support needed for Peshmerga forces."
In January, Operation Inherent Resolve spokesman Col. Steve Warren estimated that the US-led coalition against the Daesh would need to train at least ten brigades of Iraqi security forces to retake Mosul.
The Daesh took hold of Mosul in June 2015 and seized the country’s largest dam, which is now at risk of collapsing and causing a major humanitarian catastrophe.
