Daesh-Linked Militants Claim Responsibility for Bombing in North Sinai
20:32 GMT 19.03.2016 (Updated: 10:37 GMT 18.10.2016) A jihadist group affiliated with Daesh has claimed Saturday’s attack on Egyptian security forces that killed 13 policemen, Al Arabiya channel reported.
CAIRO (Sputnik) — The attack on a checkpoint in the city of Arish was reportedly carried out by Wilayat Sinai (Sinai Province), a local militant group that was called Ansar Bait al-Maqdis before it pledged allegiance to Daesh in the fall of 2014.
Egypt has been conducting anti-terrorist operations in North Sinai for the last two years amid the rise of Islamism in the region.
Ansar Bait al-Maqdis emerged in the peninsula after the 2011 Egyptian revolution, which ended President Hosni Mubarak's 30-year rule. The militants aim to topple Egypt’s current government.
