MOSCOW (Sputnik) — US military advisers are training Iraqi soldiers at the Makhmur base for the recapture of the city of Mosul, currently under control of the Islamic State (ISIL or Daesh) militants, the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government's administration said Monday.
The Iraqi city of Mosul was captured by Daesh terrorists in 2014.
"US instructors are training Iraqis for the storming of the city of Mosul… There is a large number of US advisers there," the administration told RIA Novosti.
On Saturday, the US Department of Defense confirmed that a member of the US Marine Corps had died in a rocket strike by Daesh near the Makhmur military base.
The Islamic State, also known as Daesh is a designated terrorist group that has taken large areas of land in Iraq and Syria, where it proclaimed a caliphate. The terror group is outlawed in Russia, the United States and in several other countries.
