ATHENS (Sputnik) — Two refugees have tried to immolate themselves in a refugee camp in the Greek town of Idomeni near the border with Macedonia, local media reported.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, as the refugees soaked their clothes with a flammable liquid and set fire to themselves, iefimerida.gr news portal reported.
The people nearby immediately extinguished the fire, but both refugees suffered burns and were hospitalized.
Idomeni became residence for over 10,000 of refugees, as Macedonia, along with its Balkan neighbours, introduced border restrictions for refugees.
Earlier this month, Greece's Interior Minister Panagiotis Kouroumplis visited the Idomeni camp and compared the living conditions there to those in the Dachau concentration camp, operated by the Nazis in Germany during World War II.
