UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — The International Organization for Migration (IOM) confirmed in a statement on Tuesday that more than one million refugees have arrived in Greece from Turkey via the Mediterranean since the beginning of 2015.
"IOM this week confirms more than one million migrant and refugee arrivals to the Greek islands via the Eastern Mediterranean route from Turkey since the start of 2015. Earlier this month IOM confirmed combined land and sea arrivals surpassed the one million mark in Greece," the IOM statement reads.
Europe has faced a growing migration crisis with hundreds of thousands of migrants and refugees fleeing from Syria and other conflict zones, primarily in the Middle East and North Africa. Most migrants travel via Turkey, entering Europe through periphery states before traveling deeper into the continent to seek asylum in wealthy EU states.
