DONETSK (Rostov Region) (Sputnik) – A judge in western Russia moved to the final stages of reading out the verdict for Ukrainian Nadezhda Savchenko, implicated in guiding fire that led to the deaths of two Russian journalists, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported from the court Tuesday.
Earlier, the judge described the criminal offense charged, listed the evidence that persuaded the court to evaluate Savchenko’s guilt, and is now due to announce the penalty.
Savchenko faces a maximum sentence of 25 years for guiding artillery fire in eastern Ukraine that killed Igor Kornelyuk and Anton Voloshin in June 2014.
Judge Leonid Stepanenko dropped charges related to accusations of attempted murder of six civilians in Luhansk region, citing the mater as "outside the jurisdiction of the Russian court."
