ATHENS (Sputnik) – Aegean Airlines, the largest Greek carrier, has cancelled flights to and from Brussels for two days in the wake of deadly terrorist attacks in Belgium’s capital.

"Due to the current situation in Brussels, AEGEAN’s flights from/to Brussels are being cancelled for Thursday, March 24, and Friday, March 25, 2016," Aegean Airlines said in a Wednesday statement, adding that passengers will be offered alternative flights to and from Lille, which is located about 118 kilometers (73 miles) from Brussels.

On Tuesday, at least 31 people were killed and 300 were injured in two suicide attacks at Brussels Airport and another explosion at a subway station in the city. The Islamic State (ISIL, also known as Daesh) terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Aegean said it was waiving rebooking fees for passengers with tickets to or from Brussels issued no later than March 21.

"Rebooking/reissue fees are waived for ticket modifications and full refund will be granted in case of cancellation, for all passengers holding tickets to/from Brussels with ticket issuance date on/before 21st of March, initial travel date on/before 31st of March and new travel date on/before 31st of May," the airline said.

The United States restricted travel to Belgium for all US military personnel and their families on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the US embassy in Brussels said that US government personnel had been requested to defer non-essential travel to Brussels until Tuesday, March 29.
