MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Tunisian authorities are hoping that the number of tourists arriving in the country from Russia will increase and pledge to take all necessary measures to ensure their safety, Tunisian Ambassador to Russia Ali Goutali said Wednesday.
"We are in a hurry to provide security for you and do not want you to be exposed to the slightest danger. We pay special attention to resorts, as well as airports and tourist routes," he said at a press conference in Moscow.
In 2015, the number of Russian tourists in Tunisia decreased to 53,000 from 250,000 in 2014 amid the threat of terrorist attacks in the country.
On March 18, 2015, a group of gunmen dressed in military uniforms opened fire on tourists at the National Bardo Museum near the parliament building in Tunis, killing 22 and injuring more than 47, mostly tourists. The Daesh terrorist group, outlawed in Russia, claimed responsibility for the attack.
The Daesh radicals have carried out another attack in the country in August, killing 38 holidaymakers on a beach in the town of Sousse.
