As Nunes told reporters, "From my vantage point, it does look like an attack on Americans… It looks like it was targeted towards Americans to some degree."
Nunes detailed that he based his personal assumptions on the locations of the bombing sites: next to check-in stands for US airline companies United, American and Delta at Brussels's Zaventem airport, and at a downtown metro station less than a mile from the US Embassy.
"With all that said, if you're going to pick some locations where you might hit Americans, those would be the locations," Nunes said.
Some suggest his statements are far-fetched. Fact checkers, poring over maps of the city, identified a significant number of embassies and representations of states located much, much closer to the Maelbeek metro station, where the bombing occurred. If Nunes' conclusions are to be followed, it's safe to assume the attacks targeted Russians as well, since the Russian Embassy stands right next to American Embassy.
Furthermore, of the over 30 victims in the attack, none are Americans, although some dozen US citizens were injured.
Nunes, also claimed that the perpetrators were part of a larger cell. "I believe it's much larger," he said. As the violent extremist group Daesh claimed responsibility for the attack, this assertion by the Republican is not far-fetched.
