The Belgian authorities are holding a meeting on Thursday devoted to the situation surrounding the deportation of one of the suicide bombers in Brussels attacks to Belgium, local media reported.

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — On Wednesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkey had detained one of the Brussels terrorist attack suspects, identified as Ibrahim Bakraoui, on the border with Syria in June 2015 and subsequently deported him to Belgium. According to Erdogan, the Belgian authorities ignored Ankara's warnings that Bakraoui had maintained ties with terrorists and proceeded to set him free.

Belgian Justice Minister Koen Geens, however, said on Wednesday that Turkey had extradited Bakraoui to the Netherlands, not Belgium. According to Geens, the Belgian authorities were not aware of his possible links to terrorist groups.

According to the Vivacite radio broadcaster, the Belgian opposition has demanded that the government provide answers regarding these issues.

On Tuesday, two suicide bombers blew themselves up in the departures hall of Brussels international airport in the northeastern municipality of Zaventem and another explosion went off inside a subway carriage at Maelbeek station near the EU institutions. At least 31 people were killed and 300 were injured in the attacks.

On Wednesday, Belgian Federal Prosecutor Frederic Van Leeuw identified the Maelbeek suicide bomber as Khalid Bakraoui, and said his brother Ibrahim was one of two perpetrators of the blasts in Zaventem.

Daesh has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
