MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Germany has long been a potential target of terrorist attacks, such scenario should not be ruled out, Justice Minister Heiko Maas said.
"Germany has long been a potential target for the attacks. We cannot expect the international terrorism to pass Germany by. Nobody can guarantee absolute safety in democracy," Maas told the Saarbruecker Zeitung newspaper in an interview released Saturday.
"No terrorist can threaten our free society," he stressed.
Maas’ statement comes in the wake of Tuesday's terrorist attacks that left at least 31 people and some 300 injured in two bomb blasts in Brussels' Zaventem airport and an explosion at a metro station in the city center.
The Daesh jihadist group, outlawed in many countries, including Russia and the United State, has claimed responsibility for the blasts.
