MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to Het Nieuwsblad newspaper, on March 22, when Brussels was hit by a series of deadly suicide bombings, the police communication system was out of order for hours and the rescue operations were significantly complicated, as the police could communicate only via Whatsapp.
"There were no orders and nobody really knew what to do. The mobile phone network was also out of order. Fortunately, Whatsapp worked. Without this app we we could not communicate at all," federal police spokesman Peter De Waele said as quoted by the media outlet.
Two blasts took place in the departure hall of the Brussels Zaventem international airport on Tuesday. Another explosion took place at the Maelbeek metro station near the European Union institutions. Thirty-one people were killed and more than 300 were injured in the attacks. The responsibility for the attacks was claimed by the Daesh terrorist group, outlawed in many countries, including Russia and the United States.
