MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Republicans party’s Dhuicq, who is also a member of the French legislative defense commission, introduced the resolution to the country’s lower house, the National Assembly, last month and is planning to debate it in April.
"These economic sanctions are destroying the Syrian economy and therefore are responsible for reinforcing the Islamic State [Daesh] militant group," Dhuicq said.
The resolution calls for lifting the embargo against Syria so that the country can get humanitarian aid and aid for reconstruction.
"We have to contribute to restoration of the state of Syria and in the region and lifting of the embargo would constitute the first step of this affair," the resolution says.
Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with the army loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad fighting several opposition factions and militant organizations.
On Thursday, talks between representatives of the government and the opposition concluded in Geneva. UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan De Mistura suggested in a final resolution following negotiations that all parties to the talks agreed that Syria shall seek lifting of economic sanctions against it during the period of political transition.
