US State Dep't ‘Senses’ Unprecedented Momentum in Syrian Political Process
18:57 GMT 28.03.2016 (Updated: 10:51 GMT 06.08.2022) The United States has detected an impetus in the Syrian peace process that it never witnessed before, coming on the heels of US-Russian talks in Moscow, US Department of State spokesperson John Kirby told reporters on Monday.
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — He added that US Secretary of State John Kerry believes his discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow last week have provided a boost to the Syrian peace process.
"There is a sense of momentum now in the [Syrian] political process that we haven’t seen before," Kirby stated.
Kerry was encouraged by the "healthy" agreements related to the Syrian reconciliation talks he had reached with the Russians after meeting with Putin and Lavrov each for four hours, Kirby noted.
Kirby said it is worth noting that the Syrian government and opposition were able to agree to a common set of principles during the proximity talks in Geneva.
The latest round of talks between the Syrian government and opposition factions opened on March 14 in Geneva and ended on March 24.
