On March 20 the world celebrated International Earth Day. Annually on this day when the vernal equinox comes in, the Peace Bell tolls in the UN headquarters in New York, calling for people to think about the preservation of our planet. Take a look at 10 uninhabited islands whose pristine nature has evaded the impact of civilization.
Cocos Island is the largest of all uninhabited pieces of land in the Pacific. Legend has it that a large treasure was buried there in the 16 century, and “Lara Crofts” have been looking for it ever since.
Champ is located in the central region of the Franz Josef Land archipelago in Russia’s north. It is famous for spheroliths – huge ball-looking stones of unknown origin. Some attribute them to the impact of waves while others cherish the idea of UFO activity.
Ball’s Pyramid is a volcanic island in the Pacific and a house for numerous bird species. Red-tailed tropicbirds, boobies, petrels sit on eggs there without any fear of human interference.
Okunojima is a tiny parcel of land in the Sea of Japan inhabited by rabbits. In 1971 school students released eight animals into the wild, and the island swiftly turned into a rabbit paradise.
The Midway Atoll, consisting of three sandy islets, is equidistant from Japan and California. The local nature reserve’s staff members are the only residents there.
Howland is a coral island in the triangle formed by the Marshall, Kiribati and Nauru islands. In 1937 pilot Amelia Earhart was trying to find the island during her round-the-world flight. She never reached the destination and disappeared.
