US State Department: Syrian Army Victory Over Daesh in Palmyra ‘Good Thing’
18:31 GMT 28.03.2016 (Updated: 10:51 GMT 06.08.2022) The United States considers the Syrian government’s victory over Daesh in the historic town of Palmyra as a positive development, US State Department spokesperson John Kirby told reporters on Monday.
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US Secretary of State John Kerry sees the Syrian government retaking Palmyra as a positive event, especially considering how Daesh decimated the city’s heritage sites, the spokesman added.
"We do think it’s a good thing that Daesh no longer controls it [Palmyra]," Kirby stated.
Kirby continued, however, that the United States does not believe the Syrian army under the command of President Bashar Assad can bring peace to all of Syria.
The Syrian army confirmed Sunday that it had liberated the historic city of Palmyra from Daesh terrorist group with the support of national aviation and Russian Aerospace Forces.
The city has been under the control of Daesh since May 2015, with terrorists constantly destroying Palmyra's historic monuments, which are a designated UNESCO World Heritage site.
