EgyptAir Plane Hijacker Faces 10-Year Prison Sentence
Man, identified as Seif Eldin Mustafa, who hijacked an Airbus A320 with 81 people on board en route from Egypt’s Alexandria to Cairo, will face up to 10 years in prison, according to local media.
CAIRO (Sputnik) — The hijacker of the EgyptAir passenger airliner faces up to 10 years in prison if found guilty, local media reported Tuesday.
Earlier in the day, a man identified as Seif Eldin Mustafa hijacked an Airbus A320 with 81 people on board en route from Egypt’s Alexandria to Cairo. The plane subsequently landed in Cyprus' Larnaca airport, where the hijacker was detained after negotiations with local authorities.
The Egyptian Akhbargate news portal reported, citing constitutional law experts, that the maximum sentence for this kind of crime was 10 years. The prison sentence could be reportedly replaced with compulsory treatment if the defendant were declared insane.
The hijacker is set to be extradited to Egypt after Cairo files an official request to Cyprus.
None of the passengers or crew members sustained injuries during the incident, according to Egypt's Ministry of Civil Aviation.
