France Welcomes Recapture of Syria's Palmyra From Daesh Militants
13:49 GMT 29.03.2016 (Updated: 16:52 GMT 29.03.2016) France welcomes the liberation of the Syrian ancient city of Palmyra from Islamic State (IS) militants, French Foreign Ministry spokesman Romain Nadal said Tuesday.
PARIS (Sputnik) — French Foreign Ministry spokesman Romain Nadal said:
"The liberation of Palmyra from Daesh [IS' Arabic name] is positive news."
According to the spokesman, France has been urging all parties to the Syrian conflict to combat terrorist groups, including Daesh and al-Nusra Front, both outlawed in Russia and several other states.
The Syrian army confirmed Sunday that it had liberated Palmyra from Daesh with the support of national aviation and the Russian Aerospace Forces.
Palmyra and its historic ruins have been under Daesh control since May 2015. The jihadist group destroyed part of the ruins, which are a designated UNESCO World Heritage site.
