MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Kurdish fighters have killed seven terrorists, including a senior Nusra Front commander, during fierce fighting in northwestern Syria, a source in Syrian Kurdistan’s representative office in Moscow told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.
Aside from the Nusra Front, the Kurds are said to be fighting two other extremist groups in the Afrin canton, located in Syria’s Aleppo province, according to the source.
"In the morning, a group of militants fired mortars and heavy weapons at several villages in the vicinity of the towns Minaq and A’zaz and attacked the Kurdish militia [there]. Fierce fighting is ongoing," the source said.
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces fighting numerous opposition and terrorist groups, including the Nusra Front, which is outlawed in many countries including Russia.
On February 22, Moscow and Washington reached an agreement on a ceasefire in Syria, which took effect at midnight on February 27. The ceasefire does not apply to terrorist organizations operating in Syria.
