WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On Tuesday, US presidential hopeful Donald Trump said that more governments should obtain nuclear weapons, including Japan and South Korea.
"That prospect would be incredibly destabilizing," Earnest commented. "Right now the policy of the United States is that we should denuclearize the Korean peninsula."
The press secretary argued that Trump’s comment directly contradict existing policies of the international community.
"It is hard for me to imagine why it would be a good idea to give the North Koreans any justification to further accelerate their nuclear weapons program."
Trump’s controversial remarks come ahead of the fourth Nuclear Security Summit, which will take place in Washington, DC between March 31 and April 1.
