BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev urged the European Commission on Wednesday to jointly work on the settlement of the situation with EU sanctions against Russia.
Nazarbayev held a meeting with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker in Brussels earlier in the day.
"We discussed regional policy, Ukraine's issues, sanctions against Russia that have a significant impact on us, and we agreed to work together in these directions to find an appropriate solution for both Europe and Russia, as well as for Kazakhstan of course, as it is affected too," the Kazakh president said.
In 2014, the European Union and the United States sanctioned Russia's key defense, energy and banking sectors following Crimea’s reunification with Russia and accused Moscow of fueling the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine.
Russia has repeatedly refuted all allegations, warning that the Western sanctions are counterproductive. In response to the restrictive measures imposed by the West, Russia announced a food embargo on products originating in states that introduced sanctions against it.
