MOSCOW (Sputnik), Anastasia Levchenko – Earlier in the day, Syrian President Bashar Assad told Sputnik he was not expecting any major changes in the Syrian parliament following the elections set for April 13.
"These elections are meaningless, and they are a direct and obvious violation of the commitment to the framework defined in the resolution 2254, which talks of a process leading to elections a year and a half from now. These elections have no reason to take place, and he [Bashar Assad] is already announcing anyways that they will be meaningless," Bassma Kodmani said.
According to Kodmani, the future elections lack any form of credibility.
On February 22, Assad issued a decree that set a date of the legislative elections in the country.
The announcement came minutes after Russia and the United States reached an agreement on a ceasefire between Syrian government and rebel forces effective from 22:00 GMT February 26.
