STOCKHOLM (Sputnik) – The Gothenburg court sentenced the two men for their role in the 2013 killings in Syria on December 14, using photographs and videos as material evidence proving their guilt.
"The Court of Appeal shares the assessment of the district court and determines that the defendants are the two masked people on the films as the prosecutor claimed, and that they participated in such an active way in the killings to be recognized as perpetrators," the court said in a statement.
Swedish media identified the convicted terrorists as Hassan Mandlawi, 32, and Amin Sultan, 30, both of whom deny taking part in the taped executions.
The appeals court ruled that the intent of the killings was "to seriously intimidate those who do not have the same view as the perpetrators," adding that the crimes should be punished as terrorist offenses.
It was reported later in the day that three Swedish citizens and one holder of a Swedish residence permit have been detained in Turkey attempting to cross into Syria.
