The United Nations has delivered humanitarian assistance to some 150,000 people in 10 out of 18 besieged areas of Syria since the ceasefire was enforced on February 27, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said in a report.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) – The International Syria Support Group (ISSG) – global and regional powers and organizations that brokered intra-Syria talks – tasked the UN task force to deliver aid to 18 besieged areas in Syria following a meeting in February.

In his report to the UN Security Council, Ban said that the aid was delivered to not only 150,000 people living in besieged areas, but also tens of thousands of people living in hard-to-reach regions.

According to the report, the cessation of hostilities is generally holding in Syria.

Assad: Russia's Military Support Speeds Up Political Solution in Syria
Since 2011, Syria has been mired in a civil war, with government forces fighting a number of militant groups and opposition factions. According to the United Nations, some 6.6 million people have been internally displaced by the conflict, while an estimated 4.8 million have fled the country.

On February 22, the United States and Russia reached an agreement on cessation of hostilities among the parties to the conflict in Syria. The ceasefire took effect on February 27 and is generally holding across the country despite reports of minor violations.

In late February, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Hussein said that over 450,000 people remained trapped in besieged towns throughout Syria where humanitarian agencies could not provide them with aid.
