BEIJING (Sputnik) — Chinese police have detained almost 3,000 undocumented migrants during a large-scale special operation, the Ministry of Public Security said Thursday.
Police have detained 2,943 migrants, including 2,860 citizens of countries of Southeast Asia and another 83 people from South Asia. The police operation has been conducted jointly by law enforcement of Hong Kong and mainland China.
Police also managed to dissolve three crime syndicates engaged in illegal human trafficking to China from neighboring countries. As many as 142 suspects, including 29 people from South and Southeast Asia, have been detained.
According to the ministry, undocumented migrants attempted to enter the territory of Hong Kong from mainland China to find a job.
