ST. PETERSBURG (Sputnik) – Russia respects the European Court of Human Rights decisions, but gives priority to its own constitution, Russian Deputy Justice Minister Georgy Matyushkin said Thursday.
“We don’t doubt the state’s common obligations to execute ECHR rulings that are handed down on the basis of the Convention, but the Russian Justice Ministry understands that neither the Convention, nor the ECHR legal positions based on it can replace the Russian legal system’s priority of the Russian Constitution,” Matyushkin said during a Constitutional Court meeting.
