ANKARA (Sputnik) – The information that Turkish border guards are shooting and killing Syrian refugees is completely false, a source in the Turkish Sanliurfa province administration told RIA Novosti Thursday.
Earlier on Thursday, The Times newspaper reported, citing Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, that Turkish border guards shoot refugees attempting to escape the civil war in Syria. At least 16 migrants were killed, including three children, according to the newspaper said.
"This is a complete misinformation. The Turkish military has never and under no circumstances will shoot at the refugees. Turkey has more than 2.7 million Syrian refugees, and due to this fact, the accusations seem immoral," the source said.
Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with the government forces fighting several opposition factions and militant organizations. The crisis has caused a humanitarian disaster making millions of people flee their country.
