WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — World leaders at the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington, DC say they welcome the "entry into force" of the 2005 Amendment to the Convention on Physical Protection of Nuclear Material and Facilities and would like to see further ratifications, the White House announced on Friday unveiling the participants’ joint communique.
"We welcome the imminent entry into force of the 2005 Amendment to the Convention on Physical Protection of Nuclear Material and Facilities and encourage further ratifications," the joint communique read.
Nuclear Summit Leaders Commit to Central IAEA Role in Nuclear Security
World leaders have committed to reaffirming the central role the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) plays in strengthening global nuclear security, the White House said on Friday announcing a joint communique.
"We reaffirm the essential responsibility and the central role of the International Atomic Energy Agency in strengthening the global nuclear security architecture and in developing international guidance, and its leading role in facilitating and coordinating nuclear security activities among international organizations and initiatives and supporting the efforts of States to fulfill their nuclear security responsibilities," the communique read.
