LUGANSK (Sputnik) – According to LPR legislation, the voluntary surrender of unregistered weapons and ammunition exempts people from liability for their storage. Otherwise a person can be punished with up to four years in prison.
"Overall in the past 24 hours citizens have voluntarily handed over 110 units of weapons and ammunition," the spokesperson said.
The LPR spokesperson told RIA Novosti that LPR investigators have located a weaponry storage at one of the republic’s private homes and are currently conducting a check.
The self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics (DPR and LPR) were established in Ukraine’s southeast (Donbass) after the May 2014 independence referendums.
Kiev launched a special military operation in Donbass in April 2014, after local residents refused to recognize the new Ukrainian authorities, which came to power as a result of a coup.
In February 2015, a peace agreement was signed between the two sides in the Belarusian capital, Minsk. The deal stipulates a full ceasefire, a weapons withdrawal from the line of contact in eastern Ukraine, an all-for-all prisoner exchange and constitutional reforms, which would give a special status to DPR and LPR.
