MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Sunday, the Syrian army supported by militia and the Russian Aerospace Forces recaptured the historic city, which had been under the Daesh control for about a year.
"The second group of experts from a joint detachment of the International Mine Action Center of the Russian Federation Armed Forces, robotic Uranium-6 demining systems and armored personnel carriers fitted with suppressors of proximity fuzes and radio-controlled explosive devices were delivered to the Hmeimim airfield in the Syrian Arab Republic," the statement reads.
Before the retreat, Daesh planted numerous of bombs and land mines all over Palmyra. The Syrian army has already destroyed half of the estimated total of explosive devices, or over a thousand mines, in the ancient city.
Russia has pledged to deploy sappers and specialized robots to Syria to assist Syrian experts and has called on other countries to do likewise.
