In order to implement the vision of a world without nuclear weapons, in 2009 US President Barack Obama organized the first summit on nuclear security. The latest Nuclear Security Summit took place between March 31 and April 1 in Washington DC.
"This year it has been held for the fourth and probably the last time. It is obvious that the balance of Obama's disarmament policy is disappointing," the magazine wrote.
According to Becker, the modernization of the US nuclear arsenal is the biggest mistake Obama has made. Although it was triggered by the Republicans and strained US-Russia relations, the move has not contributed to the establishment of a nuclear-free world but rather has led to a new arms race
"All in all, the world is now further away from being free of nuclear weapons than seven years ago — and Obama himself is also to blame for it," the magazine wrote.
The decision to update the US nuclear weapons program "mutated into a monstrous idea," the author added.
The US government will presumably invest about one billion dollars in the modernization of nuclear weapons over the next thirty years.
