BAKU (Sputnik) – The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry reported on Monday that the Armenian Armed Forces have shelled Azerbaijani positions 121 times.
“The Armenian side has fired heavy artillery using 60-, 82-, and 120-mm cannons. Over the last 24 hours, the ceasefire has been violated 121 times. The situation remains under the Azerbaijani Armed Forces’ control. The Azerbaijani Army is controlling the territory liberated on Saturday,” Azerbaijani Defense Ministry spokesman Vagif Dargahli told RIA Novosti.
Three Azerbaijani soldiers have been killed on the front line of the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh in overnight battles with Armenian military forces, the spokesman added.
“With the goal of returning its control over liberated territories, the Armenian Armed Forces conducted offensive in Agderinsk, Terter, and Khodjanvendsko-Fizuli regions. As a result of the battles, the Azerbaijani Army suffered losses. Three soldiers were killed.”
The conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh began in 1988, when the Armenian-dominated autonomous region sought to secede from the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic, before proclaiming independence after the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991. In September 2015, the conflict escalated, with the sides blaming each other for breaching the truce.
