Baku Denies Reports Azerbaijani Drone Shot Down in Nagorno-Karabakh
09:55 GMT 04.04.2016 (Updated: 12:15 GMT 20.09.2023) The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry's spokesperson called reports that an Azerbaijani drone had been shot down in Nagorno-Karabakh "typical Armenian disinformation".
BAKU (Sputnik) — Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry dismissed reports on Monday that an Azerbaijani drone had been shot down in Nagorno-Karabakh.
"This is typical Armenian disinformation. We will soon present videos of Azerbaijani progress on the contact line in Karabakh," ministry spokesman Vagif Dargahli told RIA Novosti.
On April 2, Azerbaijan and Armenia
reported intensified fighting in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. The sides accused each other of violating the ceasefire agreement which had been in place since 1994.
The conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh began in 1988, when the Armenian-dominated autonomous region sought to secede from the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic, before proclaiming independence after the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991. In September 2015, the conflict escalated, with the sides blaming each other for breaching the truce.
