Greek debt relief is not on the agenda of the ongoing talks between Greece and its European creditors, a spokesman for the German Finance Ministry said Monday.

BERLIN (Sputnik) — Negotiators have returned to Athens for bailout talks that aim to assess Greece’s progress in implementing austerity reforms in order to unlock a new cash tranche.

"The issue of writing-off Greece’s debt is not on the debate’s agenda," Martin Jaeger told reporters in Berlin. "We confirm that Greece has moved forward significantly," he said, adding much was still to be done.

Greece owes billions in debt to the International Monetary Fund, the European Central Bank and several EU countries, most notably Germany. IMF chief Christine Lagarde said in a letter dated April 3 that an end to bailout discussions was a good distance away.
